![]() After you are able to breathe again, you’ll really appreciate them!Īnd then it’s all downhill, right? Exiting the Fire Control Station with views through the old bunker (mind your head!) Taking a break (note to self: Perhaps doing the Diamond Head hike in the midday sun wasn’t the best idea!) views across to Koko Head from Diamond Head But of course, you have to push though it for the spectacular views. ![]() By the time you get to the spiral staircase through the old fire control station (another 52 steps), you may be wanting to give up. The last section is probably the hardest part, consisting of very narrow and steep metal stairs, a 225 ft tunnel, then more steps (only 99!). After the first set of stairs and then coming through the tunnel, I had to take a rest! With the heat and the relatively fast climb, I was feeling really tired. This is really going to work your legs! My advice would be to wear trainers or hiking boots and have plenty of water. But it is a deceivingly difficult climb, with a big elevation gain over a short distance. They must be fitter than me!įrom the trailhead to the summit is 0.8 miles one way. I’ve seen some people doing the walk up from Waikiki to the start of the trail head instead of driving. Always be prepared for a wait of some sort for parking. So I think it depends on the season and the day. We still only had to wait 5 minutes to get a parking spot. Although the last time we did this hike in January 2019, we decided on a lie in, so didn’t get to the car park until around midday. The quieter parts of the day for parking are probably early morning and later in the afternoon. The car park & hiking trail are open from 6am – 6pm, with the last entrance for the trail at 4:30pm. British sailors later named it Diamond Head because they mistakenly thought minerals on the beach were diamonds (they were calcite). If you’re staying in the area and only have the time or inclination to do one hike, this would be one of the best ones, for the unparalleled views from the summit alone.įun fact: I assumed that Diamond Head was so called because it resembled a diamond shape (the whole crater looks like a crown to me), but the Hawaiian name, Lē ʻahi, is apparently formed from two words which mean the shape of the dorsal fin of a tuna! (Lae + ahi). ![]() You can read all about the military history of the crater itself and the original trail on the official State Park website here. Diamond Head stands resplendent over the ocean at the highest point. The immense circular crater comprises over 475 acres, including the inner and outer slopes. This is probably the most popular hike in Hawaii, and is considered a “must do” when visiting Oahu. Starting point: Car park Diamond Head State Monument (around 10 minute drive from where we stay at the Waikiki Beach Marriott) Stunning views of Honolulu from the summit ![]() If you get tired of sipping cocktails by the pool, and find yourself yearning for adventure (and need to burn off some of the calories from the Cheesecake Factory!) there are some fantastic hiking trails around the island. In my previous post Summer in Hawaii Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Oahu, I wrote about where we stay, and favourite places to dine out in Waikiki and surrounding areas. ![]() ![]() ![]() You’re convinced you just saw your first manta! You describe the animal as a creature that is flat with a tail, and it looked like it was flapping its wings as it swam away. You come up for air and excitedly tell your friend that you saw. Electric rays are found at many depths, from shallow waters to as far as 3,000 feet below the surface. It’s your first time snorkeling or diving and out of nowhere you see a creature swimming away from you. Unlike other rays, electric rays use their tails to swim, not their pectoral fins. They have rounded dorsal fins and thick tails. Electric rays have such an acute electric sense that they are thought to be the most electrically sensitive of all animals.Įlectric rays are usually 1 to 6 feet in diameter and have a more rounded shape than other rays. These organs can generate between 50 and 200 volts and 30 amperes of electricity, enough to shock or injure a human, and definitely enough to take out small prey. While all rays have a highly developed electric sense, electric rays have special electric organs on either side of their heads. Instead, they stun their prey with electric shocks. Electric rays are smaller than many other types of rays and do not have barbs or stings. ![]() Stingrays sting, skates defend themselves with barbs, and manta rays are too large to have many natural predators. Commonly recognized species of stingrays include the southern stingray, the spotted eagle ray, and the blue spotted ray.Įlectric rays have a different form of defense from other rays. These rays can be found in all parts of the world, even in fresh water. Stingrays are ovoviviparous, meaning that their eggs develop and hatch inside the mother, who then gives birth to live young. Many rays spend the majority of their time on the sea floor however, some stingrays, such as spotted eagle rays, are more commonly observed free-swimming. ![]() You can also identify stingrays by their characteristic diamond shape and by their location-they are frequently found half-buried in the sand rooting for food. A diver is unlikely to be stung by a stingray unless the stingray feels threatened. Thankfully, stingrays only sting out of self-defense. Most stingrays' tails have venom glands, which inject an incredibly painful toxin when the sting is used. They are easily identified by their elongated, thin tails with barbed stings. Stingrays are probably the most recognized type of ray. At best, you will frighten it away, but you could receive a nasty sting or painful electric shock, or worse. Rays are not aggressive toward divers, but you should never touch a ray. While all rays have flattened bodies, they vary by body shape (round, diamond, or triangular), their method of swimming, the thickness of their tails, and the presence of stings or barbs. You can identify rays by their shape and behavior. Rays are either bottom feeders or filter feeders, rooting for crustaceans and mollusks buried in the sand or using a sieve-like filter to strain plankton from the water. Most rays swim using their pectoral fins, either by moving them in an elegant, wave-like motion or by flapping them like a bird. ![]() All rays have a flattened shape, with large, rounded pectoral fins fused to their bodies and heads. Rays are fish, and they are similar to sharks in that their bodies are supported with cartilage instead of bone. A wide variety of rays inhabit the oceans and even some bodies of fresh water. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This action will then affect the rest of the cells in the same row and enlarge their heights. It's definitely not as impressive as the CGI in Iron Man, even though they had a similar budget.Īnother reason why The Incredible Hulk got kind of ignored over time is because it stands out a lot compared to the other movies in the MCU. The CGI in the movie is decent overall, but there are some moments that feel like you're watching a video game cutscene. In contrast, the green smasher looked nothing like Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk, which was one of the reasons it got criticized. For Avengers, they actually used motion capture technology to make Hulk actually look like Mark Ruffalo. Not only did we get a different actor playing Bruce Banner in the MCU, Hulk himself looked entirely different when he next appeared in Avengers (2012). The recasting really threw some people off and got them questioning if this movie is even a part of the MCU. His performance as the troubled scientist was top-notch, but he eventually was replaced with Mark Ruffalo. He was a big name back then, certainly bigger than Robert Downey Jr. In The Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner was portrayed by Edward Norton. Well, it is actually quite easy to forget this movie even existed, and there are some reasons for it.
